The Many Uses of Baking Soda
Baking soda has many purposes, some that we didn’t know about. One of the very usual and unusual uses is to cleanse retainers and dentures. Retainers are mostly used to retain teeth after they have been released from braces. Dentures are used as artificial teeth.
Although there are more common cleansers for retainers and dentures such as polident, efferdent and a few other famous names. You drop the small tablet in water, you then let your dentures soak in the mixture no less than 30 minutes. Most people let their dentures soak over-night for the best results. These small tablet kills bacteria that causes bad breath odor, removes stains and plaque.
For plastic and clear retainers the same procedure takes place. Since people have to sleep in their retainers at night, you’re only required to soak the retainers for at least ten minutes. The cleansing tablets kill the same germs and bacteria as it does for dentures.
If left to soak too long in the name branch cleansers, the retainers may detereate and become weak.
Dr. Jeffery Summers is a licensed orthodontist in Greenville, South Carolina. Dr. Summers suggests the use of baking soda as a cleanser for retainers because it doesn’t leave any scratches and it’s a harmless cleaning component.
“The baking soda removes the stains off your teeth and removes it from your retainers,” said Summers. “You can also make it as a paste. Just make sure that you rinse it thoroughly to avoid the taste,” he continued.
Dr. Lance Masters specializes in general dentistry and oral surgery. He also recommended the use of baking soda over the name brand cleansers.
“When you brush your dentures, the brisels from the brush can scratch and damage the valplast and cause bacteria to grow,” Dr. Master’s said. “For the best results mix the baking soda with peroxide to kill the germs and rinse out the scratches.” He finished.
Baking soda is a solution to many regular problems. The common use of baking soda is more basic than we know and has been used for more than a century.
