Jennifer Gonnerman has been an expert on the criminal justice system since 1997. She has worked for two prestigious magazine outlets such the New York magazine and the Village Voice. She is currently a staff writer at The New Yorker. Gonnerman has presented many articles on convicted felons and their hardships during and after prison.

The elaboration on the project is not just talk about the financial and social difficulties that that they face, but also the mental and psychological state they suffer from. Gonnerman has covered many stories on convicted felons and those who have also been wrongfully convicted. Her first story; “Before The Law” was on Khlief Browder, a New York teenager who spent three years in a federal prison and was not charged with a crime.

Gonnerman describes the last few months of Browder’s life before he tragically committed suicide. Browder spent over two years at Rikers Island. He stayed in solitary confinement for the majority of his time. When Gonnerman describes the abuse that Browder endured from the correctional officers and the inmates as well. This treatment was far too intense for any human to go through. Gonnerman has studied the criminal system from all point of views. She discussed how Browder was very paranoid after finally being released. Although he was a free citizen, he was still a prisoner in his mind.

Gonnerman was a finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize in feature writing. She has also wrote a story on a Philadelphia district attorney who struggled to get re-elected. She has also wrote many articles on wrongfully convicted people and the impact of corrupt police officers in a housing project in Chicago.

Her first was book “Life on the Outside: The Prison Odyssey of Eliane Barlett ” was about a women coming home after spending 16 years in prison for a first time drug offense. This is particularly interesting since Barlett was arrested under the Rockefeller drug laws.

Jennifer Gonnerman is an accredited expert because she has studied many felons. She’s seen all outcomes on of the criminal justice system. With the Recent uproar of the recently release Netflix semi- series “When They See Us”depicting the trial and outcome of the Central Park Five trial, many people are questioning the many incarcerated felons and justice system.

The study of the Mass Incarceration has been investigated over the recent years. It is said the the 13thamendment has also been violated and has placed in prison.
